Elements: Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, and Astatine (which are all diatomic molecules, except for astatine)
Group :VIIA
Halogen means “salt forming”.
These elements are the major cause the salinity of the oceans.
Neutral halogens have 7 valence electrons.
Properties include:
Low melting and boiling points (increase down a group)
Poor conductors of electricity and do not retain heat well
Solids are brittle and fragile
Smell bad
Individual Properties and Uses:
Fluorine is a pale yellow gas and is used in toothpaste to reduce dental decay
Chlorine is a yellowish green gas and in used as disinfectant
Bromine is a brownish red liquid and can be used in photographic film
Iodine is a shiny, dark gray crystallized, solid that when burned, produces deep purple vapors and is used as antiseptic
