Hydrogen
The name "hydrogen" comes from the Greek words hydro (meaning water) and genes (meaning forming). So, hydrogen means "water forming".
It is the most abundant of all the elements. Hydrogen makes up more than 90% of all elements. Hydrogen is an odorless, colorless gas in pure form. It's the first element in group 1. Hydrogen is highly flammable. It's the lightest element. In 1766, Henry Cavendish discovered this element. Hydrogen is known as "the clean fuel of the future”. Jupiter is composed of mostly hydrogen, and it is found in the sun and most stars. Uses: -as a pollution-free source of energy in some buses and cars. -to make ammonia for fertilizer. -to remove sulfur from fuels during the oil- refining process -to hydrogenate oils to form fats -for filling balloons and airships ~use in airships stopped after the explosion of the Hidenburg |
